Medical research boost for Singapore
Asiane – Aug 14, 2007
A*STAR and the National University of Singapore (NUS) have collaborated with German technology powerhouse Siemens Medical Solutions to set up a new Clinical Imaging Research Centre (CIRC). The centre which aims to undertake world-class research will see Siemens set up a foundation grant of US$2. 5 million over five years to support collaborative research in translational medicine as part of its partnership. The centre will be dedicated to research and focuses on key disease areas such as cancer neurodegenerative disorders and other diseases that are of particular relevance to the health of Singapore's population… The CIRC will be a focus for development and validation of new imaging methods while enabling the study of novel interventions in humans. Professor Radda said "Clinical imaging capabilities and research is highly integrative and collaborative nature. We want to develop CIRC into a major clinical research imaging centre in Asia and a national resource for research and training in the R&D community. CIRC catalyses scientific and medical advances and stimulate industry growth by putting very powerful capabilities into the hands of biomedical and clinical investigators from both the private and public sector. Clinical imaging holds major potential benefit to patients. "CIRC will initially be based in the NUS Centre for Life Sciences Building before moving to the new building at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. This strategic location will enable CIRC to capitalize on the rich clinical research milieu and to foster greater collaborative efforts with the universities research institutes hospitals and specialty centers.

Synergy said it chose to formalise its existing alliance with Promedica International (PMI) "based on the firms’ cultural similarities in terms of client orientation and service". "Now our clients will have the opportunity to perform multi-national study activities in Russia and North America using common project and data management resources and a single set of standard operating procedures" said Nikolai dintsov general director of Synergy. California-based PMI specialises in Phase II-IV clinical research and its services include project management study management and monitoring data management clinical quality assurance and medical writing while SynRG offers a range of clinical trial services from regulatory affairs to pharmaco-economic surveys for Russian and foreign biopharma companies. But the deal also benefits PMI who now has direct access to the booming Russian clinical trials market – according to the firm this deal indeed expands both firms’ capabilities. "ur combined experience and service provider relationships in clinical research facilitate comprehensive efficient clinical project plans and implementation in North America Russia and CIS [Commonwealth of Independent States] countries" said Ellen Palo the firm’s founder. Russia was recently voted one of the most attractive destinations to conduct clinical research outside the US but the country’s clinical trials industry has recently been dealt a blow after a temporary ban on the export of human samples was implemented in May. The restriction which took several weeks to be lifted prevented hundreds of clinical trial and other research samples from being sent abroad for vital analysis.

Moreover the more recent events that occurred after the second quarter of 2007 let me highlight two important ones. First ART announced the recent initiation of a prepurchase and evaluation process for a SoftScan optical breast imaging system at the Ville Marie Medical and Women’s Health Center in Montreal which we expect to result in the first breakthrough sale of SoftScan by the Company this year. Second ART announced an agreement to develop and conduct clinical research with the Stanford Breast Imaging section of Stanford University to evaluate the effectiveness of its SoftScan optical breast imaging system in the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of breast cancer. Let me now focus more specifically on our three products. First our eXplore ptix product. As you know our preclinical in-vivo optical imaging device eXplore ptix is a major strategic asset for ART. With a foothold in the major preclinical research labs throughout the world we expect major research organizations to opt for continuity in imaging modalities across the entire research platform from preclinical to clinical research.
