The Barwon Health chief executive said the high-tech facility at Geelong Hospital would attract top clinical researchers and practitioners to the region bringing to Geelong the kind of people needed for the new Deakin Medical School as well as Barwon Health. Ms De Gilio said Deakin University and Barwon Health were ideally placed to develop a research hub that focused on the major health care issue of our time _ chronic disease. She said successful clinical research depended on having the capacity to quickly form research teams in response to emerging health issues and opportunities that arose from basic research discoveries. Barwon Health executive medical director Max Alexander said the clinical research facility would include laboratories office space and infrastructure for clinical trials. He said the facility would focus on clinical research rather than basic science. Dr Alexander said Deakin and Barwon Health have ear-marked a site behind Kitchener House on Ryrie St for the new research and training precinct which would be built by 2009 at a cost of $24 million.
