While reluctant to speak publicly several researchers have privately told the Sunday Mail one of the Hanson Institute’s great strengths is being located at the RAH allowing researcher-clinicians to easily move between patients and laboratories. Department of Health chief executive Dr Tony Sherbon said SA had produced world-leading scientists researchers and medical pioneers. "This funding will help advance clinical research and reinforces the benefits of incorporating facilities for clinical research into those for patient services" he said. Included among the major NHMRC grant winners are:PRF Gerald Holtmann who will lead a project examining peptic ulcer bleeding – a significant cause of death in Australia. PRF Sharad Kumar who received two grants totalling $1. 4 million for his team to continue studying mechanisms of diseases such as hypertension pulmonary oedema and anaemia. ASSCIATE Prof Goodall who was granted $550500 to investigate what controls the levels of the micro RNAs to allow metastasis to occur in colon and breast cancer.

NUH NUS medical school boards to be unified

“So that’s part of the problem of managing a teaching hospital” he said. For almost 20 years doctors at NUH and medical professors at the NUS medical school have lamented that they serve two bosses under the two separate Health and Education Ministries. Doctors at the hospital who want to do more clinical research may not be able to tap into the research grants held by the university. At the same time NUS medical teachers who want to apply their discoveries of diagnosis and cures have limited access to the hospital patients. This ‘tension’ inhibits clinical research. Patients also suffer especially those who have complications or unusual diseases. Their illnesses could have been diagnosed or treated faster if the doctors could better leverage on the expertise of their academic counterparts.

However CCL3L1-CCR5 genotypes also modify HIV clinical course independently of their effects on viral load and CMI. These results identify CCL3L1 and CCR5 as major determinants of CMI and demonstrate that these host factors influence HIV pathogenesis through their effects on both CMI and other viral entry–independent mechanisms.
