The research subject that dare not
Toronto Star – Oct 23, 2007
The research subject that dare notspeak its nameIdeas ct. 20I find it extremely odd that the writer chose to report on the subject of pedophilia from a narrow angle of sympathetic neurobiological clinical research supporting the view that "societal fixation on punishment makes it nearly impossible to rehabilitate pedophiles once they’ve been through the justice system. "She cites a proponent of pedophile-friendly neurobiological clinical research who wants us to stop demonizing pedophiles stop letting them "rot in maximum-security cells forever" and treat them with the same understanding alcoholics are treated. If we just let them "live and work in an environment free of harassment" and show some respect for their unfortunate affliction society would have paid its long overdue debt to pedophiles. If only you had spent a little more time researching the growing epidemic of child sexual abuse in this country and its impact on the victims – and not the predators – you would find that the victims’ emotional and psychological scars are of a permanent nature and that post-traumatic syndrome is costing society billions of dollars in therapy – not to mention diseased wasted and damaged lives. These children grow up to be damaged adults and live incarcerated in their souls.

From a financial perspective we delivered solid revenue and profitability growth that were both above the high end of our guidance. There were also many positive business developments during the quarter. In particular we had a major competitive win with Eisai a Tokyo-based global pharmaceutical company through an agreement with Eisai Medical Research. We won a multi-million dollar contract with Novartis Vaccines the world’s fifth largest vaccine business and a division of Novartis AG a top 10 pharmaceutical company. We continued to add and expand our relationship with key CR’s and Lilly became another top ten pharmaceutical customer of our EDC solutions to purchase our advanced safety solutions. We continue to be encouraged by the overall strength of the market demand for EDC solutions and we are optimistic about our outlook. As Rodger will discuss in a moment we are increasing our financial guidance across each key metric for the full year due to our strong third quarter results combined with a strong pipeline of future opportunities.

Sleep Drugs Found nly Mildly Effective but Wildly Popular
New York Times – Oct 23, 2007
“They appear to be as effective as some of the newer ones and they’re infinitely less expensive. Mahowald said that his center participated in industry-sponsored clinical research but that he did not personally work as a consultant or adviser to pharmaceutical companies. Such drugs which include flurazepam brand name Dalmane and temazepam Restoril sell in generic versions for 30 to 50 cents each. Another inexpensive alternative and one of the most widely used sleep medications in this country is the antidepressant trazodone. It works well in many patients but some people say it leaves them groggy the next day according to Dr. Daniel Carlat a psychiatrist in Newburyport Mass.
