UTMB offers clinical science doctoral degree
Bizjournals.com – Nov 20, 2007
The program offers students advanced training in research involving human subjects and populations and the opportunity to investigate basic human biology and help develop new treatments for diseases. "This important graduate program will provide the formal training required to conduct quality research and will help address the state and national shortage of physicians and other health care professionals committed to a career in clinical research" said Cary Cooper dean of the school. Clinical research leads to the development and testing of new drugs procedures or medical devices that may subsequently be commercialized and become widely available. The program which is supported in part by a clinical research curriculum award from the National Institutes of Health and by an endowment from the Carl J. Herzog Foundation was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board on ct.
Gene-transfer technique trial for childhood blindness under way
News-Medical.net – Nov 20, 2007
and his colleagues at the University of Florida began work on a virus that could safely deliver corrective genes into living animals. It’s been six years since a multi-university team used gene therapy to give sight to puppies born with a defect that causes blindness. Now the gene-transfer technique is being tested for safety in people in a phase 1 clinical research study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Florida with support from the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health. A young adult with a form of hereditary blindness called Leber congenital amaurosis type 2 or LCA2 received an injection of trillions of replacement genes into the retina of one eye this month making the volunteer one of the first people in the world to undergo the procedure.
South Africa ‘underutilised’ for clinical trials
utSourcing-Pharma.com – Nov 20, 2007
South Africa’s "distant" proximity to the US along with an accompanying ignorance and lack of perception about what the country has to offer in terms of clinical research are partly to blame for this Catherine Lund vice chapter head of the South African arm of the Associate of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) and founder of South Africa-based CR nQ Consulting told utsourcing-Pharma. The country’s "cumbersome" regulatory environment has also been a deterrent to some people considering including South Africa in a global study. Currently it takes 12-14 weeks from trial submission to approval compared to around a month for most western countries said Lund. "n the surface this can turn potential sponsors off" she said.

Data showed that patients with less than three CTCs at baseline had significantly better survival rates versus patients with more than three CTCs – an overall finding consistent with metastatic breast cancer patients. Data also showed that CTCs are a strong independent predictor of progression-free survival and overall survival and that the combination of CTC analysis and radiological assessment may provide the most accurate assessment of prognosis. "Clinical research validates the significance of circulating cancer tumor cells" said Robert McCormack Ph. Vice President of Medical and Scientific Affairs Veridex. "Elevated CTCs in the blood stream are associated with lower survival rates. We believe based on the clinical research that identifying CTCs as soon as possible can lead to improved patient outcomes. "The CellSearch test works by using antibodies that are joined to microscopic iron particles called ferrofluid. Powerful magnets then "pull" the CTCs out of the blood sample. They are then stained with additional bio-molecules and chemicals so that they can be positively identified as CTCs.
