Despite the success of the NIH’s interdisciplinary Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPRE) grants — started by the National Cancer Institute in 1992 — there have been pitfalls. SPRE grants have one director who oversees a minimum of four research projects each of which has two co-leaders: one for basic research and one for clinical research. The grants which target translational cancer research require a clinical trial at the end of five years. It’s been a tough target to meet. 5-million-a-year SPRE grant is divided up among all participants it works out to less than the average R01 grant which is typically $220000 a year.

This is of particular concern because perhaps one-third of all CT scans performed in the United States may not be medically necessary the radiation researchers say.
