Camp KC – Nov 17, 2007
The proposed mechanism of action of KP-1461 is Viral Decay Acceleration. Researchers hope that the incorporation of this nucleoside analog into the HIV genome will heighten the frequency of errors introduced during viral replication ultimately leading to its extinction. HIV is an RNA or retrovirus. Retroviruses replicate through a DNA intermediate pairing cytidine to guanosine and thymidine to adenosine… and volunteers are needed to participate at the Dybedal Clinical Research Center in the ld Northeast area of Kansas City Mo. Clay director of clinical research at KCUMB presented data on KP-1461 at the American College of Clinical Pharmacy?s 2007 annual meeting in Denver last month. A love of the chemistry side of medicine drew him into pharmacy and an emergency room experience with a Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia patient who was HIV positive helped steer him toward his current work. Clay is now recruiting people for the proof of concept phase of the KP-1461 trials. Subjects will participate in a 124-day study. Each visit to the center should be about one hour and transportation and child care can be arranged or reimbursed.
