For founding and then building the largest clinical research organization in the world for keeping that organization in the Triangle and for giving UNC the largest philanthropic gift in its history Dennis Gillings is Triangle Business Journal's 2007 Businessperson of the Year. Dennis Gillings was born on April 25 1944 in World War II London. He credits his father a fishmonger who was "quick with numbers" for nurturing his interest in mathematics at a young age. Gillings went on to earn a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Exeter and the equivalent of a master's degree in mathematical statistics from the University of Cambridge. He then returned to the University of Exeter where he taught while earning his doctorate in mathematics.

This initiative promises to divert some research attention toailments common in developing countries. And importantly move research toacademia and contract-research organisations in countries such as India whereclinical research costs are much lower. The drugs developed through the processwould not be IPR-protected and would therefore become a low-cost generic fromday one. However for the idea to be successful it is essential thatthe breakthroughs are recognised and appropriately rewarded. CSIR should try torope in similar publicly funded institutions from other countries. This wouldhelp enhance the credibility of the initiative through a wider internationalparticipation.

Favorable review for RPCI frees up funding

The renewal of the Cancer Center Support Grant is a multi-step competitive process in which Roswell submitted a 1100 page grant application and had an on-site visit in September 2007 from NCI peer-reviewers. To be designated a NCI comprehensive cancer center a facility must demonstrate depth and breadth of research activities in basic clinical and prevention control and population-based research as well as maintain a strong body of interactive research that bridges these scientific areas. In the area of clinical research a comprehensive cancer center must initiate and conduct early phase innovative clinical trials; and provide leadership and accrue patients to these trials. A center also must provide outreach education and information on cancer to the community it serve The peer-review team recommended that Roswell Park receive the full $4. 9 million per year it requested in its application. Funding determinations have yet to be announced by NCI.
