Medical Device Clinical Trials CE Conference: Registration Still…
PR.com – PR.com (press release) – Dec 8, 2007
com)– Palto Alto CaliforniaMarch 10-11th 2008The Medical Device Clinical Trials CE conference will be dedicated to and focused on providing strategic information to Medical Device Executives related to the completion of clinical research studies on-time and within budget parameters for start-up to medium sized corporations. Through focusing specifically upon the topics and challenges directly impacting these organizations executives will have the opportunity to walk away with tangible solutions to the obstacles preventing them from completing their trials on schedule. It is a known fact to both device executives as well as venture capital firms that clinical research is the most expensive stage of a medical device companies’ growth and development. During this stage organizations are often burning through enormous amounts of funding and in the end find themselves short of the capital required to finish their studies and secure regulatory approval. These clinical studies are often delayed due to shortfalls in subject recruitment proper site management as well as not meeting difficult protocols from the FDA. This conference program will address these and other important topics. At executive level the best way to learn and be introduced to new ideas and solutions is from trusted peers in a highly participatory environment not from stand alone presentations or mass produced literature.
Honey beats meds at soothing kids’ cough
Tehran Times – Dec 8, 2007
In a study of kids having trouble sleeping because of cough a research team at Penn State College of Medicine compared the effectiveness of a little bit of buckwheat honey before bedtime versus either no treatment or dextromethorphan (DM) the cough suppressant found in many over-the-counter cold medicines. “”Honey provided the greatest relief of symptoms compared with the other treatments”" concluded lead researcher Dr. Ian Paul Penn State’s director of pediatric clinical research. An FDA advisory board recently recommended that over-the-counter cough and cold medicines not be given to children under 6 years of age because of a lack of effectiveness and potential for side effects. “”With honey parents now have a safe and effective alternative to use for children over age 1 who have cough and cold symptoms”" Paul said. Paul cautioned that honey should never be given to children younger than 1 because of the rare risk of infantile botulism.
‘Mini Transplant’ Patients’ utcomes Similar Using…
sciencedaily.com – Dec 8, 2007
and colleagues in the Hutchinson Center’s Clinical Research Division appear in the December issue of the journal Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation. "The main message for referring physicians is that if the patient is a candidate for a nonmyeloablative or mini transplant but does not have a suitable related donor the transplant should not be delayed provided a matched unrelated donor is available" said Mielcarek the lead author of the paper. This is a significant finding because historically "standard" (myeloablative) stem-cell transplants from unrelated matched donors have been associated with increased risk of non-relapse mortality and decreased overall survival compared to transplants from matched related donors.
Good news bad news in battle against breast cancer
San Antonio Express – Dec 8, 2007
Dennis Slamon principal investigator for the Breast Cancer International Research Group which did the study said the results offer promise for 250000 women worldwide who are diagnosed each year with these aggressive breast tumors. But the results also show the potential benefits must be weighed against the risk of cardiac complications Slamon said. "For doctors and for patients there are choices they need to think about (depending on) what they want to achieve" said Slamon director of clinical research at the University of California at Los Angeles. "There are plenty of women who are cured of their disease just from their surgery and radiation" Slamon said. "Do we put that whole group at risk for a potential problem? That is a clinical decision between the patient and the doctor. " Results were presented on the opening day of the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium which continues through Sunday. The international study involving 3222 women combined Herceptin with two different chemotherapy combinations either Adriamycin carboplatin and Taxotere or Taxotere and carboplatin.
