New research infrastructure for neuroscience gets nod from internation…
Channel News Asia – Oct 19, 2007
It plans to do so by rolling out a new neuroscience research programme injecting S$140 million to develop new research infrastructure at both the Kent Ridge and utram campuses. A National Academic Clinical Research rganisation will also be set up to support clinical trials in Singapore. All these new initiatives have got the thumbs-up from the Biomedical Sciences International Advisory Council which is holding its annual meeting in Singapore. The challenge is to strengthen research and turn it into tangible benefits for patients. To do that the Agency for Science Technology and Research (A*STAR) is partnering the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School in a new Neuroscience Research Partnership (NRP) programme. Its research will focus on neuro diseases – such as dementia and depression – at the Biopolis and the utram campus.
Two international cancer research centres to set up in S’pore

“It is also a strong validation of Singapore’s growing importance as a global node in cancer research. These developments will boost our bio-medical science efforts and strengthen our capability in cancer research to bring new and novel therapeutics to cancer patients” he added. The global non-profit Ludwig Institute will set up a research branch in Singapore for translational and clinical research. It will be the institute’s first branch in Asia as the other nine are in Australia Europe and the Americas. But Mr Khaw also stressed the importance of health economics to ensure the system is sustainable and affordable for patients. Anti-cancer drugs such as herceptin for breast cancer cost tens of thousands of dollars in the United States he said this has led to spiralling insurance premiums that have become too high for some employers to cover leaving some patients unable to afford treatment. To fight cancer the minister stressed that not only more investment in clinical research is needed but also greater international collaboration to maximise synergies and the chances of success.

markets is expanding its reach. Based in San Antonio Synergyst has recently entered into a trio of Florida markets — Jacksonville Miami and rlando — and plans to further expand its partnership efforts to at least a half-dozen additional cities over the next six to 12 months. Synergyst is hiring clinical research consultants for these new markets. They will seek out physicians and physicians groups interested in lucrative clinical trial opportunities and then work to connect them with various biotech pharmaceutical and medical device companies — including a number of the major players like. For a flat fee Synergyst provides participating physicians with marketing legal financial recruitment and regulatory services support out of its San Antonio headquarters… Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers prove the safety and efficacy of their medications or treatments before they can receive the necessary approvals to market their respective products in the United States. "Clinical research is rewarding to those who participate in it" says Dr. Alan Preston who prior to founding Synergyst in 2003 was CE of four different managed-care payors and also a large multi-specialty physicians group. "Not only is the physician helping determine the future safety and efficacy of drugs that reach the marketplace" he says "but for many clinical-trial patients they get free medical care that otherwise would not have been available to them as well as access to some of the most cutting-edge products.
Tapping the potential in clinical research
Hindu – Dec 3, 2007
— Clinical Research organisations are multiplying in India. With Bangalore Hyderabad and Delhi being the hubs of activity job opportunities in this sector are growing. Clinical Research is a scientific study of the effects risks efficacy and benefits of a drug before it is launched in the market. These trials are undertaken at various stages and studies are conducted even after the launch to monitor safety and side-effects. Clinical trials are conducted by pharmaceutical companies or clinical research organisations (CR’s) on their behalf.
$20m coup for research team
NEWS.com.au – Oct 21, 2007
While reluctant to speak publicly several researchers have privately told the Sunday Mail one of the Hanson Institute’s great strengths is being located at the RAH allowing researcher-clinicians to easily move between patients and laboratories. Department of Health chief executive Dr Tony Sherbon said SA had produced world-leading scientists researchers and medical pioneers. "This funding will help advance clinical research and reinforces the benefits of incorporating facilities for clinical research into those for patient services" he said. Included among the major NHMRC grant winners are:PRF Gerald Holtmann who will lead a project examining peptic ulcer bleeding – a significant cause of death in Australia. PRF Sharad Kumar who received two grants totalling $1. 4 million for his team to continue studying mechanisms of diseases such as hypertension pulmonary oedema and anaemia. ASSCIATE Prof Goodall who was granted $550500 to investigate what controls the levels of the micro RNAs to allow metastasis to occur in colon and breast cancer.
