£20m ploughed into research centres

The centres – to be established at existing facilities in Newcastle Cardiff Cambridge Nottingham and Belfast – will receive up to £5 million each for research into key public health issues. The initiative is being funded by the UK Clinical Research Collaboration an umbrella group made up of health charities and regional bodies. Spread over a five-year period the money will go towards providing academic jobs and training opportunities as well as boosting equipment and IT systems. Professor Ian Diamond chief executive of the Economic and Social Research Council leading the funding group said: “I am delighted to announce these important new centres which will be vital for bringing together world class experts from a diverse range of backgrounds to ensure that essential research is carried out to make a significant impact on the public health of the UK population. The five newly established centres of excellence will research topics such as diet and nutrition alcohol physical activity tobacco and drugs. The UK Clinical Research Collaboration consists of the British Heart Foundation Cancer Research UK the Economic and Social Research Council the Health and Social Care Research and Development ffice for Northern Ireland the Medical Research Council the National Institute for Health Research the Wales ffice of Research and Development and the Wellcome Trust.

Researchers found that 73 per cent of patients whose stomachs were shrunk with the simple surgical procedure were cured of Type 2 diabetes. By contrast only 13 per cent of diabetics who followed conventional therapy – dieting weight loss and medication – went into remission. John Dixon head of clinical research at the Centre for besity Research and Education at Monash University in Melbourne Australia and lead author of the paper stressed that obese patients saw their diabetes disappear when they lost significant amounts of weight.
