As a new key objective of the renewed agreement HL7 and CDISC will develop joint educational programs in areas around the world. At present there are several opportunities scheduled or in the planning stages that are designed to educate on the collaborative activities of HL7 and CDISC. A half-day CDISC-HL7 tutorial titled “Harmonizing Standards Initiatives: An verview of Collaborative Standards Initiatives for Clinical Research and Healthcare” will be offered in Copenhagen Denmark in April as well as other regions.

The typical site recruits only five to ten patients requiring sponsors to contract with up to 2000 sites for global studies and spend as much as $60 million before the first patient is even recruited. “Forty percent of those sites won’t recruit a single patient” says Fort because investigators typically devote half the day to their regular practice and patients can’t be “passively” recruited into most studies. Synexus orchestrated a mass screening to recruit 1200 patients from six sites into a prostate cancer prevention trial says Fort. Another 2800 patients from nine sites were recruited for a lipid study.
