" Results of clinical research into the treatment of Victoria Police officers were discussed at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists’ Congress in Melbourne. Assoc Prof Hopwood said 12-week programs of group therapy couples counselling and medication had reduced symptoms of depression anger and anxiety by a third for most officers. But while results compared favourable with the outcomes of treatment for war veterans police officers’ reliance on alcohol to self-medicate was something they’d been unable to overcome. Assoc Prof Hopwood said alcohol treatment might be needed for some officers before they tackled wider PTSD problems. Figures obtained by the Police Association yesterday reveal that in the 2007-08 financial year 40 Victoria Police officers were treated for PTSD up from 25 a year earlier.
