S$25m research project to identify risk factors for schizophrenia

The study is part of a S$25 million programme to identify genetic biological and social risk factors for schizophrenia. ther parts of the programme include identifying genes that cause schizophrenia and a drug trial on new treatment to improve patients’ functional skills. The study is one of two projects awarded the Translational and Clinical Research Flagship Programme this year. The two research programmes were selected from eight submissions and were chosen based on their scientific merit the strength of the research teams and their relevance to Singapore. The other S$25 million project led by the Singapore Eye Research Institute focuses on glaucoma and corneal diseases – the leading causes of blindness in Singapore. The Singapore National Eye Centre treats over 34000 cases of glaucoma and 15000 patients with corneal diseases every year. Professor Donald Tan director of Singapore Eye Research Institute said: “We have very little understanding or ability to modulate wound healing.

$10bn added to health infrastructure

5billion Health and Medical Infrastructure Fund which was to be supplemented by proceeds from the sale of the publicly owned Medibank Private. Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon said the fund – which will finance new hospital and medical facilities equipment and technology – was the "biggest single investment in health infrastructure ever made by an Australian government". The money will also go towards medical research including projects and facilities that support better links between hospital-based clinical research and high-quality clinical practice. The Rudd Government has inherited a number of investment funds from its predecessor including the Future Fund and the Higher Education Endowment Fund rebadging them in the process. Ahead of last year’s election Labor promised to at least match the Howard government’s Health and Medical Infrastructure Fund without assigning a final figure to its promise. The decision to allocate $10billion to the purpose "demonstrates the Government’s commitment in partnership with state and territory governments to equip Australia’s health and hospital system for the future" Ms Roxon said. The $10billion will be drawn from the 2007-08 and 2008-09 budget surpluses with a share of future surpluses allocated to the fund "as appropriate".
