Amphetamine Abuse Linked To Heart Attacks In Young Adults
Science Daily – Science Daily (press release) – Jun 5, 2008
Texas ranks 27th among all states in use of methamphetamine among 18- to 25-year-old adults according to a 2006 government report. "We’re talking about a state that is near the middle of prevalence of methamphetamine use in the United States so it’s possible that the number of heart attacks in young adults in other states with a much higher prevalence of amphetamine abuse may be higher as well" said Dr. Westover who is a National Institutes of Health Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Scholar at UT Southwestern. Paul Nakonezny assistant professor of clinical sciences and psychiatry at UT Southwestern was also involved in the study. The work was supported by a North and Central Texas Clinical and Translational Science Initiative grant from the National Center for Research Resources a component of the National Institutes of Health.
Heart patients often overestimate survival
Economic Times – Jun 5, 2008
?Becausedifferences in perceived survival could affect decision making regardingadvanced therapies and end-of-life planning the causes of these discordantpredictions warrant further study? Dr Larry A Allen from the DukeClinical Research Institute in Durham North Carolina and colleagues conclude. ?Prior studies havelooked at end of life issues in heart failure? Allen told Reuters Health?but few have looked specifically at the patients? perceptions oftheir chances for survival; and none have looked at how patients?predictions compare (with) statistically based model predictions. ? The new study involved asurvey of 122 patients in the Duke Heart Failure Disease Management Program. Thesubjects were interviewed between July and December 2004 and followed throughFebruary 2008. The average patient age was 62 years and 47% of subjects wereAfrican American the report indicates.
