With symptoms that mimic gastroenteritis emergency services personnel are sometimes slower getting a woman suffering a heart attack to a hospital than they are a man suffering a heart attack. Thomas Concannon assistant professor of medicine at Boston’s Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies at Tufts Medical Center authored the report on speedy treatment of women’s initial symptoms of heart attack published in the January 14 issue of the journal ‘Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and utcomes. ’ He says his study did not explain why the delay in treatment occurs but suggests the inability to recognize the symptoms as associated with heart attack on the parts of both the patient and the response team. Concannon’s research team studied 5887 calls to emergency medical services (EMS) when symptoms of cardiac distress were suspected. These EMS calls occurred in 10 municipalities in Dallas County Texas in 2004 and involved 29 hospitals and 98 EMS dispatch depots. n average women were slower to arrive at hospitals by an average of 2.
