The privately owned company is recruiting adults 18 and older who have early influenza symptoms ? fever cough aches and pains ? for a clinical study of peramivir a new antiviral medication. Instead of spending a miserable week in bed you might be feeling much better in just a few hours. In the process you could get paid $300 and become a public health hero. According to Gail Baillargeon president of the research company peramivir has been tested through several winter flu seasons to determine its ability to reduce severe flu symptoms and prevent transmission of the potentially dangerous disease.

Sanofi’s total annual R&D budget is more than $5 billion he said. Most of that goes toward mid- to late-stage clinical trials of promising experimental drugs. But the company also spends several hundred million dollars a year on pre-clinical research and early-stage clinical trials. He said he’d “like to take a major chunk” — about 50% — of the budget for pre-clinical research and early-stage trials and use the money to partner on drugs being developed by small companies. “Part of the reason the pharma model didn’t work is we just kept throwing money at things and hoping the next blockbuster would come along” he said.
