“We are pleased with these data from this key Phase IIa clinical trial evaluating CK-1827452 in stable heart failure patients. These results support our scientific hypotheses for this novel drug candidate in this complex disease population” stated Andrew A. Wolff MD FACC Cytokinetics’ Senior Vice President of Clinical Research and Development and Chief Medical fficer. “We believe this clinical trial together with our other clinical trials conducted with CK-1827452 has established a solid basis for our advancement to the next stage of clinical development. “In part this is because the ‘gold standard test’ a comparative clinical trial of smokers and non-smokers has never been conducted. Gauch describes that gold standard test as the “backbone of medical progress” and credits the clinical trial with increasing survival rates for breast uterine prostate and bladder cancer. Nevertheless the clinical trial has come under fire in recent years and in 2005 a prominent medical researcher controversially declared in the journal PLoS Medicine that most clinical research findings are false. While Gauch doesn’t go nearly that far the crux of his book is a discussion of the “seven deadly flaws” that comprise the clinical trials’ Achilles heel ranging from “the imperfect sample” to “the impractical result. ” In his view the gold standard has lost a great deal of its luster over the past several decades as increasing influence from the pharmaceutical companies and venture capital firms that fund clinical studies causes serious conflicts of interest. “The relationships among industry scientific investigators and academic institutions are pervasive” he writes.

“We believe this emerging field will completely transform health care as we know it” said West. “The Institute aims to be the catalyst to move ideas and concepts quickly into reality bringing cost-effective wireless health solutions to doctors patients and their families. Under the leadership of Dr. Topol the Institute and its research team will conduct clinical research on solutions to better prevent diagnose manage and treat major health conditions ranging from Alzheimer’s to heart disease to obesity. The Institute will build a base of biomedical and bioengineering expertise to ensure that devices in development improve the existing level of care and are safe reliable and cost effective. “The rapid and remarkable progress in wireless sensors – continuously tracking important parameters such as blood sugar blood pressure all vital signs sleep state and even caloric intake and expenditure – has the potential to change medicine in a radical and unprecedented way” said Dr.

Male Circumcision Reduces Risk f Genital Herpes And HPV Infection …
Science Daily (press release)
The findings build upon earlier clinical research funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) part of the NIH which found that circumcision decreases a man’s risk of acquiring HIV infection through heterosexual intercourse by more than 50 percent. "Medically supervised adult male circumcision is a scientifically proven method for reducing a man’s risk of acquiring HIV infection through heterosexual intercourse" says NIAID Director Anthony S. "This new research provides compelling evidence that circumcision can provide some protection against genital herpes and human papillomavirus infections as well.

Heart Doctors Expect More Cost-Focused Studies
Wall Street Journal
(Dow Jones)–Doctors at a major cardiology conference said they anticipate more clinical research aimed at determining the cost-effectiveness of drugs and medical devices amid the bama administration’s push to clamp down on health-care spending. Drug and medical-device makers face increased pressure to show their products won’t break the health-care bank or could even save the system money. Doctors and researchers meanwhile realize they have to start thinking more about health costs as well rather than dodging the topic to avoid the possibility of limiting treatments options. “Almost every big randomized trial now is going to have a cost-effective.

” According to Parent the company still manages server farms but wants to be associated more with strategic consulting and an in-depth knowledge of the drug-development lifecycle. Following the Script In addition to its recent acquisition Court Square is in the midst of two other important projects Parent was anxious to share with BusinessWest. Last year the company teamed up with three other consulting firms to create the Clinical Research Consortium of Massachusetts (CRCM) a group of Bay State-based research-industry companies offering itself as a multi-pronged consultant group to foreign governments who want a bigger piece of the clinical-research business in Europe. The consortium’s first work is in the Lombardia region of Italy. “We went to Milan and met with the minister of health and a number of clinical research organizations and put together a five-year plan that’s in front of them right now” said Parent. “If they take it we’ll have a great project in front of us that includes strategic consulting at first and eventually technical integration work. ” Court Square is also working with Tufts Medical Center to build a SharePoint portal for researchers.
