At some point new knowledge needs to be translated to people and tested in the real world. This requires that volunteers (either healthy individuals or people with the disease or condition that is being studied) step forward and agree to participate in medical research. This research commonly referred to as clinical research can take many forms such as evaluating the safety of a new drug comparing which of two existing treatments is more effective or examining the connection between health behaviors (e. diet and exercise) and certain diseases. Underrepresentation of population groups in health research hampers our ability to develop new ways to understand and treat diseases. We know that disease prevalence varies by population group.
