5 million from the Avon Foundation since 2001 for breast cancer research community outreach and education and “safety net” medical care to uninsured and underserved populations. Current projects include research into using biomarker knowledge to better predict which early state breast cancer (DCIS) will progress to malignant breast cancer and a project to determine whether virus transcripts in breast fluid serve as a marker for risk of breast cancer. •The Avon Foundation has provided over $1. 5 million to eight clinical trials and clinical research projects in California through our “Progress for Patients” partnership with the National Cancer Institute. These research projects focus on: oExamining the role of genetics and the environment in breast cancer development. oNovel biomarkers (distinctive biological indicators) for examining a persons risk of developing breast cancer monitoring disease progression and predicting response to therapy. oComputer aided diagnosis applied to breast MRI.

This approach has precedent. For example the National Institute for Health and Clinical Effectiveness in the United Kingdom teaches consumers who participate in the institute’s program decision making. Methodology of CERRemembering that the purpose of CER is to inform decision making consider the principal forms of clinical research. Systematic reviews of the literature summarize a body of evidence. ver the past 2 decades they have become indispensable to expert panels that formulate practice guidelines or policymakers who make insurance coverage decisions. These “macro” decision makers are starting to use decision models for the same purposes (5). Two broad categories of research are the starting point for systematic reviews: observational research and randomized trials.

The results confirm pharmacological activity ofLR-2040 in five leukemia cell lines and in bone marrow samples of apatient with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) treated with LR-2040 in aPhase II clinical trial. A significant decrease in intracellulardeoxynucleoside triphosphate levels required for DNA synthesis intumor cells treated with LR-2040 confirmed the target inhibitioneffect of LR-2040. These studies were conducted by a clinical research team involved inthe clinical trial of LR-2040 and high dose cytarabine for treatmentof refractory and relapsed AML under the overall direction of Dr. Guido Marcucci and Dr. Kenneth Chan at the SU Comprehensive CancerCenter. “This method developed and validated by the SU investigators haspaved a novel way to monitor activity of LR-2040 and could serve asa valuable tool to allow us to design improved treatment strategies”said Dr. Aiping Young Lorus’ President and CE.
